  1. Too good to be true
  2. Vague job requirements and job description
  3. Unprofessional Emails
  4. Online interviews via Instant Messenger
  5. Emails don’t include contact information or are sent from a personal email account
  6. Search results don’t add up
  7. You’re asked to provide confidential information
  8. They say they will send you money or valuables, or they want to use your personal bank account to transfer funds
  9. They want you to pay for something
  10. Your “gut” says it’s a scam

Reporting Job Scams

If you receive a suspicious job offer or are asked to complete worrisome tasks during the application or onboarding process, contact Career Services for assistance at 304-293-2221 or careerservices@mail.wvu.edu.   

Additionally, you should report the situation to WVU Office of Information Security (ITS). WVU ITS has prepared instructions for faculty, staff and students that receive this (or any) email SCAM. It is critical that you forward the original email as an attachment to defendyourdata@mail.wvu.edu as instructed in order for ITS to identify and eliminate the source. Follow these instructions on how to forward the suspect email as an attachment.
